Napoleon is coming back to Painshill Park
Following on from the huge success in the past, Napoleon and his army are coming back to Painshill Park.
Painshill Park, one of the most important 18th century parks in Europe, is holding a most extraordinary and exciting weekend on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th August, 2006.
Following on from the huge success in the past, Napoleon and his army are coming back to Painshill Park. The Park will be transformed into an area of the Iberian Peninsula sometime between 1809 and 1812 and Wellington’s redcoats will occupy the battlefield alongside the blue-coated French infantry of Napoleon Bonaparte ably supported by artillery and the dashing horse regiments of light cavalry.
Both days include a full programme of artillery demonstrations including live firing; the British Brigade and French Brigade will carry out drill routines including the cavalry. There will be a court martial of a deserter and a wives’ ballot to select those few fortunate enough to join their men overseas; the armies will try and recruit spectators and entice them by “Taking the King’s Shilling”. Each afternoon there will be a major skirmish with full pyrotechnic effects when the armies use their full force to try and win the battle of the day.
Families will be able to inspect The French and The British camps to re-live the troops lives just as it happened in the 1800’s. All weekend the troops of both armies will be living as they would have done all those years ago. Moving around the park, and undertaking their drills and routines, they will be constantly in character and will welcome children’s interaction with them!
